Wild Dogs and Hot Dogs

I We began this morning’s drive in a search for wild dogs that took us to the southern most portions of the Sabi Sands reserve, a rather desolate stretch of land with little grass and small shrubs. Unfortunately, our luck ran out as the dogs, who are fast hunters, traveled into an adjoining preserve where we were not permitted to go. But on the way back we came across a large male elephant, probably 50-60 years old, calmly munching on a small tree he had just pulled out of the ground. It was amusing to watch.

Next was a herd of buffalo, the one animal suffering the most from what is now a two-year drought in the region. They feed on grasses and it is getting harder to find. Watering holes are also drying up, adding to their stress level. A number have simply collapsed and died, including one we saw that must have just passed as no scavenger had found and attacked the body as yet. They will.
But we also found a baby giraffe and sought out a den of hyenas with young ones. They weren’t doing a lot and we will probably seek them out tomorrow. We wrapped up by pulling into a clearing where the lodge had set up a “bush breakfast,” complete with scrambled eggs, sausages wrapped in bacon, i.e. the hot dogs, and fixings. We spent the remainder of the morning just chilling and watching the neighborhood Nyala and Impala that seem to like hanging by our deck. We also keep thinking about how after last night’s surprises, covered in the previous post, we are not going to want to leave this place. We would seriously consider another visit, maybe to another part of Africa, for another safari. Truly a memorable experience.
