It's Africa and It's Cold?

Maybe it was end result of watching too many Tarzan movies as a child but I thought of Africa as a place that was always hot, but not this week. When we went out this morning for another game drive (pickup at 5:40 am, and we call this a vacation?) it was at best around 50 degrees with a 15-20 mph wind that made it feel colder. We almost bagged it but being the troopers we are we went ahead. I like to say it quickly got warm when the sun was up, but it really didn’t. We were, however, rewarded with our first sighting of the resident cheetah, just strolling along and likely starting to look for a meal.  (We saw the remnants of Sunday’s dinner, an impala carcass, the previous day.) We spotted the same cheetah in the afternoon drive, which was finally pleasant temperature-wise, along with a hippo out of the water, which they only do for brief periods of time due to skin that is very sensitive to the sun. So overall it was a good day.

In between, we moved from the newer part of the property to the original lodge and first impression is that we are happy with the shift. This feels like vacation — at the top of a hill with panoramic views of the valley below, with the periodic giraffe popping its head above the tree line.  Then there was the warthog that snuffled by, hoovering up what grass he could as we sat poolside, and the Nyala (for which Zulu Nyala is named) in the courtyard. A Nyala is in the antelope family but smallish. Cat food, in other words, if there were big cats on this particular reserve. Tomorrow we are off to St. Lucia, a town on the Indian Ocean coast for a boat ride and lunch. Thankfully it seems to be getting warmer and how often does your average Yank get to boat on the Indian Ocean? Some photos follow.
