Off We Go!

It’s been two years since our last big international trip to Chile. We were undecided on where to head this year, but we pulled out a trip that we’ve been talking about for five years – and are
finally headed to Turkey.
The question we always need to answer on these trips – Why Turkey? Largely because it’s a country that is just bursting with history, art and culture – all things we love in a destination.
Situated between Europe and Asia, Turkey has been host to a multitude of famous figures and turning points in history – the world’s first city (6500 BC); site of Troy, made famous by Homer; King Midas; Alexander the Great; early Christianity (legend has it St. John and the Blessed Mother are buried near Ephesus); Constantine the Great and the Byzantine Empire; Genghis Khan; the Ottomans with their sultans and harems.
All of this wealth and religion brought magnificent art and architecture – churches, mosques and palaces. There’s natural beauty too, with the Bosphorus running through Istanbul and separating Europe and Asia; the ‘fairy chimneys’ (said to be astounding rock formations) in Cappadocia; and the Aegean Sea with its resorts.
I already wish we had more time, and we may have built in a few extra days, but we had a wedding to attend in Ohio – how could we miss Jim Ambrosio’s wedding!? (Second cousin to Jim Ambrosio of Trenton.) Since we don’t have photos of Turkey yet, I’ll end this post with one from the wedding.

We’re bookending this trip with weddings – the day after we return we’re headed to another wedding – at least this one is closer to home in NJ.
We plan to post daily, internet connections permitting, and hopefully we’ll have great photos and stories to share.
