Santiago Part Dos

We got a good overview of the old part of the city yesterday, wrapping up the day at a place called Bar Liguria, which is a favorite of the locals. A basic meat and potatoes kind of place, but very good. Inexpensive as well. The waiter even seemed surprised we traveled to Santiago from the U.S. for a holiday. The best part is that it is spring heading to summer here and the days are nice and long.  We sat outside for dinner and later in the courtyard of our hotel with sunset around 8:15. It will just make heading back to a New Jersey winter all the harder.

Santiago, like other cities founded by the Spanish, is chockablock with parks. What struck me was how well maintained they were compared with Buenos Aires, where they were kind of run down. Probably due to a stronger economy. The Chileans also aren’t afraid of their own cash; five years ago the Argentines assumed many of the bank notes in circulation were fakes and the inflation rate in Argentina is pretty steep so probably it is even worse there now.
We will explore more of the city on Sunday, which is a free day. For now we are off to the Maipo Valley for some wine touring and tasting.
