Why Chile?

Avid readers of our blog (thanks Mom and Rob Klemp) might recall we answered the question “Why Sicily” in 2010. This year it’s “Why Chile?”

The genesis was our trip to Argentina. We loved Buenos Aires and Mendoza, so we wanted to see more of South America. The idea was further enforced when we picked up a brochure for the Tierra Atacama boutique hotel located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, the driest place on earth.
It’s been five years, and I couldn’t get Tierra Atacama out of my head. And after touring palaces, churches and museums in Russia and Scandinavia last year, it was time to include some nature in our next vacation. So despite spending almost every other week in Denver (mountains, desert, high altitude), we’re going to a place that’s even higher (7,000 to 14,000 feet) and drier (some areas have never recorded rainfall.)
But we’ll get in our standard vacation staples too, with stays in Santiago and Valparaiso  – and of course visits to wineries in the famed Santa Rita and Colchagua valleys. We depart Thursday night (11/14) and arrive on Friday.
So wifi permitting, we’ll post our adventures and hopefully lots of pictures from Jim’s new camera. Stay tuned!
