It’s always sad to end a trip and maybe even more than usual today because we really loved Copenhagen and could definitely spend more time there. It’s very tourist-friendly, and English is most people’s second language so we didn’t experience any language barrier in our short stint in the city.
We spent our last night eating the exalted Danish cuisine. We lucked out and got a bar seat at what had been described to us by a couple people as the best fish restaurant in Copenhagen, Kodbyens Fiskebar. It did not disappoint, and was certainly one of the best meals I’ve ever had. I can only imagine what Noma or Gist must be like. We also marveled at the creations at the bar – my cocktail of muddled cucumber and parsley with gin and lime juice was fantastic, and we whiled away a good part of the evening watching the bartender create his concoctions, all based on organic and fresh ingredients, mirroring the kitchen. (As our bartender said, it’s quite healthy, except for the gin.)
We ended up the evening at the bar at our hotel (yes, another bar – but we like to be social), where we got some insight into life in Copenhagen from the friendly bartender and also found out from another guest (from Philadelphia) that Jack White was playing at the Rokskilde music festival outside the city that night. It was also the first night of the Copenhagen jazz festival. July is definitely the time to be in Copenhagen! Hence, wishing we had more time.
We’re sitting at the airport now, waiting for our flight. In the first example of poor Scandinavian design, all the shops are outside passport control so there’s no more opportunity to pump up the Danish economy. Oh well, maybe I’ll finally finish the last Steig Larsson book….
ZZZZZZZZZ…..longest day ever yesterday; AC switched off…95 degrees in our house….already missing you guys and the ship!
