Say Hello to My Little Friends

We arrived at our first safari stop, Zulu Nayala, on Sunday, greeted by a cold front, complete with howling winds and chilly temps. We kind of expected it to be cold in Cape Town but not in this part of the country. Geographically, for those that wish to look it up, we are about 90 minutes drive time north of Port Richard, which is north of Durban on the Indian Ocean coast. We thought based on the weather we looked at before coming it would chilly in the morning but quickly warm up … Let’s just say our first game drive this morning was cold and stayed that way with sustained winds of about 25-30 mph and stronger gusts. Pat wore every layer she could. That said, within three minutes we came face to face with three grazing elephants, all female. Our guide said it was two sisters about 30 years old and a daughter. Later we encountered two giraffes, a mother and daughter. Giraffes are evidently lousy mothers; after the suckling period ends they tend to wander ahead and let the young ones fend for themselves; young giraffes are very appealing to lions and many don’t make it to adulthood. (This particular park is a private reserve that doesn’t have lions so this one is safe.) Here are photos of just a few of the animals we saw today, more to come.

  1. if this is only the beginning I can't wait to see future postings. I would never be able to endure the 24 hrs. to get there so I'll enjoy the sites, as usual, from the comfort of my home. truly hope you are warm, Pat.mom
