Day 2 of our visit to South Africa brought us to our first destination, the Zulu Nyala game lodge. Brief aside, it involved an uneventful flight from Johannesburg to Port Richards on the Indian Ocean coast and a 90 minute car ride. The most amusing part is it took about 40 minutes to unload the luggage from a smallish turbo prop; felt like I was in Philadelphia. One of the most interesting things so far is that we haven’t quite felt like we are in Africa yet, or even like we are in another country. Ok, they drive on the left, so that is different, but the main thing we decided was the fact everyone speaks English first. There is a pronounced accent, but for those of us on the East Coast, especially those near NYC, we are used to a lot of accents. It just didn’t feel that different but going on the first game drive changed things. The game reserve is privately owned, and is not truly a safari in that they do wildlife management, but you do get to see the animals up close and personal and the owner has created a lot of jobs for local people in an area that looks like has limited opportunities. (For example, our guide’s village doesn’t have electricity.)
As a hotel, the property itself is nice; it has gotten some mixed reviews, and we had some weird issues with converters for our gadgets, but overall so far no serious complaints. You have to go with the flow in other countries, it isn’t home. First dinner was good, a traditional South African barbecue called “brai.” Rooms at this part of the resort are spacious, but tomorrow we move to another part of the property where rooms are smaller but the views are supposed to be better.
