As you, my faithful and ill-served readers know, I’m not good at posting outside of vacation. But I enjoyed my dinner so much at Portland’s East Ender that I feel compelled to give it a nod.
The restaurant was recommended by a woman in my hotel lobby who heard I liked Eventide and Central Provisions. East Ender is similar, but on the quiet night I visited it was less hipster, which works in my favor, being many years outside of hipster age.
The food, though, was just as good as my two favorites. The grilled octopus with fennel, fingerling potatoes and yogurt was a perfect mix of flavors and enough for me as a main course though it’s officially an appetizer. I also ordered the beets app. They were accompanied by whipped ricotta. I would have preferred the tanginess of blue or goat cheese, but it was a good accompaniment to the octopus.
The bartender was friendly and unpretentious, and I loved his playlist so much I’m now following him on Spotify.
