Closing Day

Ferries on the Bosporus, 9/11/15

I started this post as we awaited the takeoff of our flight home and picked it up in flight. We spent our final time in Turkey relaxing along the Aegean after touring Aphrodisias. We flew from Izmir to Istanbul early Thursday. (We did do a lot of flying on this trip; we hit four airports in Turkey, five if you count the international and domestic terminals in Istanbul.) The trip home was long but uneventful. We would recommend Turkish Air. The service is good and the in flight meals were actually quite good.

We spent the final afternoon in Istanbul hitting a special biennial art exhibit at the Istanbul Modern museum and other venues. We got to the main one at the modern art museum and also a show at the former Greek School. The theme was “Saltwater,” but the art was kind of out there. Here are a couple examples:

But it was fun to take in a bit of the city on our own. Our guides throughout the trip were all good but we both wished we had one more day to explore Istanbul on our own. We finished up on Thursday with dinner at a restaurant called Maya, which does a modern take on traditional Turkish food and has appeared on some top 10 lists. Our local travel agent Ezgi of Credo Tours recommended it. (We can’t say enough about how good a job she did for us.) The food was great and it was only a block away from the most famous shop for baklava in the city, so we had to stop for some desert. The Turks definitely love their sweets. Friday before flying home we walked back to the spice market for some last-minute shopping. Here are some random pictures, though Pat may have a final comment.
