Portland, ME Restaurants – Part II – Classics

You know you want lobster, a lobster roll and/or chowder when you come to Maine. These are all great places to enjoy this classic fare in Old Port.
J’s Oyster: It’s always packed since it’s the place where
tourists know the locals go. Oysters, clam chowder, lobster – all basic,
good food. The lobster stew is great if you prefer not to deal with nutcrackers and picks – all of the lobster with none of the work.

Lobster at Gilbert’s

Portland Lobster House:  I’ve only had lobster here, but I’ve read the lobster rolls
are the best in town. A fun place with (heated if necessary) outdoor seating
and live music in season.

Gilbert’s Chowder House:  Known for their clam chowder, but their lobster is good too. Very basic inside with pleasant outdoor seating and friendly staff. A good choice if the line is long at J’s.
Jim on the deck at DiMillos

DiMillos – The floating boat was one of the first upscale restaurants in Portland, and the deck is a great place to have a drink on a nice day. I
prefer the atmosphere in the other places for my ‘basic’ Maine meal, but it’s a good spot if you like more upscale surroundings.

A recent article in the Portland Phoenix (a free entertainment weekly you should pick up when you’re in town) advised tourists to try a couple local favorites, outside of Old Port. I’ve never been to these, but would love feedback if you try them: Susan’s Fish-n-Chips and Fishermen’s Grill. Keep me posted!
