It’s…sigh….our last day in Sicily. Happily, we were greeted by the best view yet of Mt. Etna. Jim captured the sight in his earlier post. We’ll likely make one more trek up our local mountain to visit the ruins of yet another castle. We always need some workout to justify dinner.
Last night we ate at Settimo Cielo. We chose the restaurant largely because it has the same name as our favorite restaurant in Trenton, though Frommer did give it good reviews. It served more simple fare than ‘our’ Settimo. We started with spaghetti wrapped in eggplant. Jim had a simple breaded veal scallopine, and I had fresh, grilled sea bass. Sicilian-style food is at its best like this – fresh ingredients, simply prepared. I think my favorite dish of the trip was the pasta with sardines, fennel and pistachio. (I’m hoping I can talk Jim into trying this one at home.)
Sicilian wines are similar. None we’ve tried are big, bold and ‘special’ – but they’re all nicely drinkable and enjoyable. We don’t plan to bring any home (no checked baggage!), but I will definitely start looking for them more at our local liquor stores.
More later…Jim needs breakfast!
